This medal was originally issued in Germany. It implied that the Lusitania was a fair target by depicting it as carrying armaments. The medal was issued with the date of 5 May. The Lusitania was sunk on the 7th of May. When it was learned that the Germans had issued a medal to mark this tragedy it was suggested that the medal was made in advance in anticipation of it being sunk on the 5th.
