The City of London has a history of issuing medals to commemorate significant events. The medals were presented to dignitaries and later made available to collectors. For the most part, the medals are about three inches in diameter and represent some of the finest examples of Victorian medallic art. Medals were issued at regular intervals from 1831 until 1902. Another officially commissioned medal was not issued again until 1965. That medal, commemorating a banquet in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, and the few intermittent issues that followed are of disappointing artistic merit. They pale in comparison to  the finely executed earlier pieces. In 1894 Charles Welch wrote "Numismata Londinesia," a history of  the series of medals issued to that point.
